I have a 1998 VW. The master key has a built in flash light. The battery is gone and I can’t find what size battery to put in. Calling a dealer just led me to…”why don’t you come in and we will take a look at it for you”. I would also like to replace the original remote but cannot find where to do this without going through dealer and paying dealer prices.

I would think your owners manuel would have this information if its original equipment.
Consider droping by the Dealership BUT go to the parts department and let them help you. Parts guys usualy are happy to help out with these kinds of problems.
As far as getting a new/replacement remote. Go on line and type in VW Remotes. You can then enter the year and the web will locate a sorce for your new remote.
Understand about not wanting to go thru the dealership. I try my best not to go there myself.
